Does Matcha Have Fiber? Amount per Serving Explained

Yes, matcha contains dietary fiber because the powdered tea leaf remains in the drink. However, a typical 1.5–3 g serving provides only a small amount. An official Japanese reference reports 38.5 g fiber per 100 g of matcha, which calculates to about 0.58–1.16 g in a normal serving—not 38.5 g in a cup.

That distinction matters. A dry powder can look fiber-rich when expressed per 100 g while still making a modest contribution at the quantity actually whisked into one drink. The exact value also varies by product, so use a selected matcha’s compliant label, specification or appropriate analysis for commercial claims.

How much fiber is in matcha?

Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology food-composition database lists finely ground matcha at 38.5 g total dietary fiber per 100 g. The same entry reports 6.6 g soluble and 31.9 g insoluble fiber. These are reference-food values from the Japanese Standard Tables of Food Composition, not a Sailtik lot specification and not a universal guarantee for every matcha.

To convert the reference into a drink estimate, multiply the powder dose by 0.385:

The arithmetic is useful for understanding scale, but it is not a substitute for the data required on a finished-product label. Composition, analytical method, serving definition and jurisdiction-specific rounding can all affect a declared value.

Is matcha high in fiber?

Not at the usual drink dose. FDA’s dietary-fiber material uses a Daily Value of 28 g and describes 5% DV or less per serving as low and 20% DV or more as high. The 1.5–3 g reference calculations above are about 2–4% DV. This is why “38.5% fiber by dry weight” and “high in fiber per serving” are not interchangeable statements.

A brand should not place “high fiber,” “rich in fiber” or a similar regulated nutrient-content claim on a package merely by copying a generic database value. The actual product, labeled serving, destination market and substantiation need review. A sweetened premix or latte also has a different formulation from pure matcha powder.

Why matcha has fiber but brewed tea contributes little

With ordinary leaf tea, water extracts soluble components and the spent leaves are removed. With matcha, finely milled leaf particles are dispersed in water and consumed. That is why the leaf’s structural material—including dietary fiber—can remain in the serving.

Matcha does not truly dissolve like sugar. Some particles can settle if the drink stands, so consuming only part of a settled drink may not deliver the full powder dose. Whisking or shaking improves dispersion; it does not change the fiber content of the powder itself.
