How Much Caffeine Is in Matcha Compared With Coffee?

For a typical drink, brewed coffee often contains more caffeine than matcha. A commonly cited estimate is about 60–70 mg for an 8-ounce matcha serving and about 95 mg for an 8-ounce coffee, but both figures vary. A larger matcha dose or a strong coffee can change the result.

Why the numbers are not fixed

  • Matcha caffeine depends on grams of powder, cultivar, harvest and product.
  • Coffee varies with bean, grind, brew method, roast and cup size.
  • A cafe latte may use a different dose from a home bowl.
  • Espresso drinks can contain one or more shots and quickly exceed a plain matcha serving.

Compare like with like

Check the serving size first. Comparing two 8-ounce drinks is more useful than comparing a 2-gram matcha bowl with a 20-ounce coffee. If the package gives caffeine per gram, multiply by the grams used; otherwise treat online values as ranges rather than exact measurements.

How it may feel

Matcha also contains L-theanine, and people describe its caffeine experience differently from coffee. That does not mean matcha cannot cause jitters or disturb sleep. The total caffeine dose, timing and your sensitivity matter more than marketing descriptions of “clean” energy.

Safety reminder

Count caffeine from all sources. If you are pregnant, taking medication or managing a condition affected by caffeine, ask a clinician about an appropriate limit. This comparison is general nutrition information, not individualized medical advice.
