Matcha can cost more than ordinary green tea because it is a powdered, whole-leaf product with a comparatively careful production chain. The price of any tin still depends on grade, origin, harvest, freshness, packaging and the seller, so an expensive label alone does not prove quality.
1. Shade growing and limited harvest windows
Tea destined for higher-grade matcha is commonly shaded before harvest. The additional materials, labor and timing can reduce yield and require a narrow picking window. Later harvests and different cultivation choices can produce more affordable powders.
2. Turning tea into tencha and matcha
After harvest, the leaves are steamed and processed into tencha. Stems and veins are removed before the leaf is milled. Matcha is then ground to a very fine powder, a slower process than making ordinary loose-leaf tea.
3. Milling speed and quality control
Traditional stone mills work slowly. Slow milling, cool conditions, batch handling and inspection can limit throughput. Some producers use other milling systems; the method, particle size and heat control influence the finished product and cost.
4. Origin, freshness and supply
Named regions such as Uji can carry higher land, labor and reputation costs, but origin is only one part of quality. Matcha also loses aroma and color after opening, so recent packing, sealed storage and shipping conditions matter. News reports in 2025 documented strong demand, weather pressure and constrained Japanese supply, all of which can move prices.
How to compare value
- Compare price per gram, not only the tin price.
- Check harvest or packing information and storage instructions.
- Match the grade to the use: drinking, lattes or baking do not require the same profile.
- Look for transparent origin and ingredient information rather than relying on “ceremonial” alone.
In short, good matcha can be expensive because slow agricultural and processing steps limit supply. But a higher price is not a guarantee; freshness, fit for purpose and transparent sourcing are better buying signals.
