Does Matcha Lower Iron? What Absorption Studies Actually Show

Matcha can plausibly reduce absorption of nonheme iron when it is consumed with an iron-containing meal, because tea polyphenols can bind iron in the digestive tract. “Does matcha lower iron?” can refer to three different outcomes:

Together, these studies make a meal-level interaction credible. Direct, long-term trials assigning people to typical matcha consumption and measuring whether they develop iron deficiency are much more limited. Who may need to pay closer attention?

The same matcha routine will not carry the same practical significance for everyone. Relevant factors include:

  • existing low iron stores or a history of iron-deficiency anemia;
